Project Overview

For this project, I created a triptych poster series that visually captures the themes and history of the Montserrat typeface. Although the primary focus was on producing decorative pieces, the series also serves to educate viewers about the typeface’s background and stylistic influences.

Typeface Background

Julieta Ulanovsky designed Montserrat to rescue the beauty of old posters and signs from Buenos Aires' traditional Montserrat neighborhood, which was once brimming with vibrant, early 20th-century urban typography that risked disappearing amid ongoing development.

Visual Themes

Ulanovsky’s vision of preserving urban beauty is visualized by integrating the typeface into thematically significant imagery.

The Gaumont Theatre, a direct inspiration for the typeface, captures its Art Deco roots. St. Ignatius Church, one of the area’s oldest landmarks, adds historical depth. And the bustling crowd represents the vibrant energy of city life that the typeface was created to honor.

Additionally, the color palette was derived from the neighborhood’s emblem, but desaturated to contribute to the nostalgic tone of the poster series.
